Americares Medical Aid Shipment Arrives in Sudan

  • July 16, 2026

Stamford, Conn. – July 16, 2026 – As millions of people across Sudan are in desperate need of medical care after years of civil war and displacement, Americares has delivered more than 5 tons of medicines and relief supplies to address the most urgent health needs.

The shipment contains enough essential medicine and medical supplies to support health services for an estimated 23,000 patients. It includes enough medications to fill more than 97,000 prescriptions — antibiotics to treat bacterial infections, pain relievers and medications to manage diabetes, high-blood pressure and asthma. It also contains critical treatments for malaria as outbreaks are expected to increase during Sudan’s rainy season. Alight, one of Americares partners in Sudan, is working directly with local health facilities to distribute the medicines and supplies in the shipment to clinics in Kassala and Gedarif located in eastern Sudan.

The delivery comes at a time when Sudan’s health system is under immense strain. Currently the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, 14 million people are displaced and an estimated 34 million people are in need of humanitarian aid in Sudan. Of those, nearly 21 million people face critical health needs with limited or no access to essential care with health care facilities under attack and supply chains disrupted. More than one-third of health facilities in Sudan are not functional.

“After more than three years of civil war, millions of people in Sudan have been displaced from their homes and are in dire need of medical care,” said Americares Deputy Senior Vice President of Emergency Programs Provash Budden. “With local health systems pushed to the brink, this shipment provides a critical lifeline for communities facing this unimaginable crisis. These medicines and relief supplies will help support health workers and health facilities caring for survivors.”

Malnutrition and outbreaks of malaria, cholera and other diseases are increasing strain on Sudan’s health system while it faces severe shortages of staff, medicine and essential supplies. At the same time, international aid cuts have drastically weakened health programs in Sudan. The crisis has only been exacerbated by the current conflict in the Middle East, causing supply chain disruptions and rising fuel costs that are constraining the movement of medicines and humanitarian goods into the region. Aid organizations on the ground are operating with fragile resources, contributing to the urgent need for medicines and medical supplies across the country.

The shipment is part of Americares latest response in Sudan, having previously responded to a cholera outbreak by providing intravenous fluids, access to clean water and funding for mobile clinics in the region.

“The arrival of this medical donation is a powerful example of what strong partnerships can achieve, even in the most complex environments. Despite significant logistical challenges, this support will directly strengthen frontline health services and reach communities affected by the crisis,” said Alight Sudan Head of Program Implementation and Partnership Abbas Omar Bello. “We sincerely thank Americares for its commitment to saving lives and improving access to essential health care.”

Americares responds to 30 natural disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide each year, establishes long-term recovery projects and brings preparedness programs to communities vulnerable to disasters. Since it was established more than 45 years ago, Americares has provided more than $24 billion in aid to 164 countries, including the United States.
