AmeriCares Awarded Grant to Increase Medical Aid Across the United States

GE Foundation Grant to AmeriCares Expands Access to Better Health Care for More Than 250 Clinics Nationwide

In an effort to increase access to quality health care for Americans across the country, the GE Foundation – the philanthropic organization of GE – has awarded a $650,000 grant to AmeriCares.

The economic downturn in the United States has only increased the number of Americans who lack access to affordable health care. The grant will help AmeriCares expand access at hundreds of health clinics here at home, which are already serving thousands of men, women and children in need.

The grant will enable AmeriCares to expand its domestic medical assistance to over 250 health clinics serving the uninsured and underinsured throughout the U.S., delivering donated medicines and medical supplies to clinics providing primary care services. The Developing Health program helps drive
GE’s ‘healthymagination’ initiative—a commitment to help change the world’s approach to healthcare by lowering costs, touching more lives, and improving quality.

In 2009, AmeriCares delivered more than $20 million in medical assistance to 160 health clinics across the country and is committing to doubling aid to $40 million over the next two years. The grant from the GE Foundation will enable AmeriCares to broaden the support it provides to clinics, including best practices research and guidelines for stretching limited resources to increase patient treatment capacity.

AmeriCares donations provide medicines and medical supplies to health clinics so they can treat more patients within their limited budgets. AmeriCares works with clinics from coast to coast on plans to help the growing number of families who have been hard hit by the economy and lost access to quality care.
