Response to Deadly Floods in Peru

Our Emergency Team responded to the worst flooding in Peru in decades. Torrential rains in Northern Peru and the capital city of Lima forced rivers to overflow, generating mudslides and flash flooding.  The flooding caused extensive damage to infrastructure and affected approximately 1.2 million people, including 155,000 displaced. The death toll reached 85 following the intense rains and flooding.  

Our Emergency Team has completed work with our partners in Peru with Americares providing more than $8 million in emergency assistance and launching two mobile medical units in the La Libertad department.  Two more medical teams worked in Piura. The teams conducted more than 6,500 patient consultations. Cases of vector borne disease rapidly escalated including dengue and Chikungunya with nearly 6,000 confirmed and 16,000 suspected cases of dengue reported.  We responded to the outbreak with the distribution of mosquito nets, insect repellent, and water purification supplies.
