AmeriCares has worked closely with Project Medishare to provide the pharmacy, neonatal and pediatric departments of Hôpital Bernard Mevs in Port-au-Prince with medication and incubators to help treat vulnerable children since the devastating 2010 Haiti earthquake. The hospital is located in the slum area of Village Solidarité and Cite Militaire in the capital city, where thousands of survivors are living in extreme poverty.
Dr Renee Alcé, the hospital’s pediatrician, expressed her gratitude during one of AmeriCares recent site visits: “I want to thank AmeriCares for the donations they’ve given to us. One of the medications donated is paracetamol oral suspension, important for controlling fevers and pain in our young patients. Dario and his family struggle every day to make ends meet, and in fact, the ends never truly meet.
We were able to bring down Dario’s fever and address his pain with the donated paracetamol oral solution. We are grateful for the support AmeriCares provides to us.”
Joelle is another child who has benefited from the donated medicine. She was born with hydrocephalus and spent weeks in the pediatric ward due to recurring fever. The physicians were able to control her fever with paracetamol suspension, which also aided in her survival.
Millien, 7, was admitted in December 2013 for closed abdominal trauma. He was also sick with tuberculosis. He and his mother are very grateful to have alleviated his pain with paracetamol oral suspension, which was made available free-of-charge through Medishare’s partnership with AmeriCares. With his pain and fever under control, Millien was able to start tuberculosis and high protein therapy, thus improving his prospects for a successful recovery.
With its wide range of services, the 50-bed facility, in close proximity to the AmeriCares Haiti office, treats approximately 60,000 patients per year. The hospital houses a spinal cord injury unit, a rehabilitation and prosthetics/orthotics program, a trauma center and ICU and neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as surgical, ophthalmology, pharmacy, laboratory, HIV/AIDS and infectious disease services.
AmeriCares has provided Haiti with over $72 million in medicines, supplies and equipment and has also supported efforts in prevention and treatment of cholera, improving child and maternal health, combating chronic disease and rebuilding health care.
