Stamford, Conn. – Jan. 16, 2014 – AmeriCares is sending Family Emergency Kits to West Virginia to help residents affected by the recent chemical spill. The nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization is shipping kits to the United Way of Central West Virginia in Charleston for distribution to local shelters and senior centers. Each kit contains enough personal hygiene products for a family of four including soap, shampoo and toothpaste.
About 300,000 West Virginia residents in nine counties were unable to use tap water for cooking, bathing or washing clothes after an industrial chemical seeped into the water supply last week. Community shelters have been filled to capacity and schools and local businesses have been closed in many communities in the aftermath.
“We are helping hundreds of families without access to clean water stay healthy in a time of crisis,” said Garrett Ingoglia, AmeriCares vice president of emergency response. “Our relief supplies will help them through a difficult time.”
AmeriCares has delivered medical relief and humanitarian assistance to millions affected by natural and man-made disasters worldwide for more than 30 years. The aid organization has a long history of responding to U.S. disasters including Hurricane Katrina, the Joplin tornado, Hurricane Sandy and the Oklahoma tornadoes last spring. AmeriCares also supports more than 600 safety net clinics serving the uninsured and underinsured all across the United States with donated medicines and medical supplies.
