Emergency Medical Aid to South Sudan

Since South Sudan gained independence in 2011, ongoing conflict with Sudan and an escalating refugee crisis has left innocent civilians with very limited access to medical care. AmeriCares has responded with funding to rehabilitate three health clinics serving 14,000 survivors, along with emergency medical aid shipments to help another 30,000 people.The crisis has prompted a massive influx of refugees and returning South Sudanese citizens to overcrowded camps with limited sanitation and little access to basic medical care.  Our disaster response team deployed to the country to ensure that the emergency aid reached partners in areas with the most urgent needs.  Health clinic rehab: In Renk, we are funding the rehabilitation of three clinics providing primary health care to approximately 14,000 returnees and residents. The rehabilitation effort helps partners improve treatment of diarrheal diseases, medical waste management, hygiene and sanitation, and health education. Additional enhancements include the installation of examination tables and waiting room benches.Emergency Medical Modules: 20,000 South Sudanese people who have returned to their native country have sought refuge in transit camps in the town of Renk, and another 13,000 have settled in the Gendrassa camp, located on remote swampy flood plain. Our medical aid shipments have replenished dwindling stocks of antibiotics, medicines and wound care supplies, enabling caregivers to help thousands of patients suffering from serious infections, malaria, injuries, pain and disease.
