Diabetes Programs Improving Health Outcomes in Haiti

In Haiti, where an estimated 7% of the population lives with diabetes and 45% have high blood pressure, AmeriCares continues to support programs in education, training, screening and control. Working with Fondation Hatienne de Diabete et de Maladies Cardio/Vasculaires (FHADIMAC), AmeriCares is improving health outcomes for diabetes patients across the country.For the third year in a row, AmeriCares has supported FHADIMAC’s World Diabetes Day efforts.  This year’s grant of $43,601 is enabling FHADIMAC to screen and educate patients and their families, as well as train doctors and nurses to provide high quality care. Assistance includes:

• Diabetes screening of 6,000 people in 10 citites (Port-au-Prince, Leogane, Grand Goave, Petit Goave, Aquin, Saint-Louis du Sud, Cavaillon, Les Cayes, Camp-Perrin and Port-de-Paix)
• Diabetes training for 200 nurses and doctors on disease management with pre and post test evaluation
• Diabetes education sessions for 6,000 patients and their families on diabetes control
• Education campaign reaching an estimated 195,000 people through radio, posters and television estimated to reach

AmeriCares Haiti provided a one-year grant to the Chronic Illness Fund at a partner clinic in Les Cayes to help provide medications, support, and ongoing care to the most vulnerable and impoverished patients suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, anemia, and asthma.
