Our Hurricane Sandy emergency response outreach is fully mobilized, prepared to rush disaster aid and, if needed, deploy relief workers to areas hardest hit by the powerful storm.
AmeriCares Emergency Response team has contacted 130 response partners in several states to assess potential needs and will remain on constant alert as the storm progresses. In the meantime, our stock of targeted medicines and supplies is positioned for immediate shipment, with special focus on tetanus vaccine, chronic care meds including insulin, first aid, water, family emergency kits, personal care and hygiene kits for the displaced, and other relief supplies. In hard-hit areas that are inaccessible due to flood conditions, we are prepared to award disaster relief grants.
“We are on full alert, connecting with partners throughout the vast area affected by the storm,” said Garrett Ingoglia, AmeriCares vice president of emergency response. “This is a very serious storm, and we are ready to help in any way we can.”
The monstrous, Category 1 storm is expected to make landfall on the mid-Atlantic shore late Monday, October 29, pounding its way northward and inland, with damaging winds, torrential rains, dangerous storm surges, flooding and even heavy snowfall in higher elevations as it combines with a winter storm system. Widespread power failures are expected. Officials estimate that the slow-moving system could affect 60 million people from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

A state of emergency and federal declaration of emergency is in effect in 8 states, and mass evacuations ordered in many coastal areas. The New York City and Washington DC mass transit system closed in anticipation of the storm’s wrath.
In our home state of Connecticut, we are prepared to deploy our mobile medical unit, if needed, to help care for the injured and displaced.
In Haiti, where the storm caused severe flooding this week, AmeriCares responded swiftly with deliveries of cholera treatment and prevention supplies. The Haiti team also prepared hundreds of family emergency kits with disinfectants, cleaning products and first aid supplies, and replenished a dwindling stock of emergency medicines at a major hospital in Port-au-Prince.
