Spotlight on: Open Door Health Clinic

The Open Door Health Clinic – one of 400+ clinics supported by AmeriCares – provides free health care services to more than 3,200 poor and uninsured patients in Homestead, Florida each year. In addition to primary care, the Open Door Health Clinic treats conditions related to arthritis, respiratory ailments, diabetes, women’s health, heart health & blood pressure, cholesterol, and gastrointestinal issues. Since 2010, AmeriCares has supported the clinic with medical donations worth $388,000 including chronic care supplies including glucose meters and one-touch test strips. “Our patients have repeatedly expressed their gratitude to the clinic, its supporters and donors for the positive impact in their lives,” said Dr. Nilda Soto, the clinic’s founder and medical director.The need:In Homestead, Florida, 31% percent of the 32,000 residents live below the poverty line.  Many are uninsured and cannot afford basic health care. The conditions of poverty contribute to poor preventive health practices and the high incidence of hypertension, diabetes, and other health problems. The Open Door Clinic is their gateway to preventative medicine and good health.According to Dr. Soto, “Medicine for the poor does not have to be poor medicine.”Resources:
