Purdue Pharma L.P. Donates $25,000 to AmeriCares for Pakistan Relief Aid

  • October 7, 2010

STAMFORD, CT – AmeriCares, a nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization, today announced it received a $25,000 donation from Purdue Pharma L.P. for continuing relief efforts in flood-stricken Pakistan.  The recent epic disaster, with a death toll of more than 2,000, has severely damaged or destroyed approximately two million homes and affected the livelihoods of more than 20 million people.  In addition to its donation, Purdue is also sponsoring a matching employee contribution program supporting AmeriCares.

Purdue, a privately held pharmaceutical company also based in Stamford, Connecticut, is dedicated to finding, developing and bringing to market new medicines that improve health outcomes.  The company is known for its pioneering research on pain, a principal cause of human suffering.

AmeriCares delivered its first shipment of critical medicines and supplies including medicines donated by Purdue in early August to Peshawar, just days after news of the massive floods were reported.  A flood disaster, especially one the scale of Pakistan’s where more than one-fifth of the country was affected, represents a unique humanitarian aid challenge and requires a much longer relief phase before rebuilding can occur.  To date, AmeriCares has delivered more than $1.9 million in total aid to Pakistan since the flooding began.

This recent donation from Purdue builds upon a long-standing relationship between the pharmaceutical company and AmeriCares.  Purdue has been providing financial support, and donating medicines and medical supplies to AmeriCares for international disaster relief efforts and to improve quality of life and medical care on a national level since 1986.

Maintaining a strong humanitarian aid presence in Pakistan since 1990, AmeriCares has delivered more than $57 million in relief supplies ranging from medicines, medical supplies, equipment, health care facilities and nutritional support.
