AmeriCares Relief Workers in Port-Au-Prince to Help Haiti

  • January 17, 2010

AmeriCares disaster relief experts are on the ground in Port-au-Prince working around the clock preparing for the arrival of AmeriCares first emergency airlift into Haiti. Our aid workers are coordinating the distribution of $5 million worth of lifesaving medical aid to help Haitian survivors of the catastrophic earthquake. AmeriCares has pledged $15 million in aid over the days, weeks and months ahead and a second airlift is planned in the coming days. Help Support AmeriCares >>

Leading AmeriCares team in Port-au-Prince is veteran relief worker Rachel Granger, who spearheaded AmeriCares monumental tsunami relief efforts. Granger and AmeriCares emergency relief expert Bret McEvoy are working to get lifesaving medicines and medical supplies into the hands of medical personnel treating survivors. Read Voices From the Field – Haiti >>

“Although the roads are damaged and fuel is in short supply, AmeriCares has the contacts and the know-how to deliver the aid to where it’s needed most,” Granger said. “Everywhere we look there are people with broken bones and open wounds who need medical attention. We are doing everything we can to quickly get AmeriCares medicines and supplies to the hospitals and makeshift health clinics treating so many survivors.”

The first of many AmeriCares airlifts is scheduled to land in Haiti on Sunday. To speed the delivery of future aid shipments, AmeriCares is pre-positioning lifesaving medicines, hospital supplies, water and other aid for Haiti in strategic locations in the United States, the Dominican Republic, Europe and India.

AmeriCares Airlift of Medicines Includes:

  • Antibiotics
  • IV solutions
  • Hospital supplies for patients with trauma injuries
  • Bandages and other first aid materials
  • Pain relievers
  • Primary care medicines for children and adults

“Disaster situations can change in a moment’s notice, so we have to be flexible. It is in our DNA” reports Christoph Gorder, AmeriCares Vice President of Emergency Response. “AmeriCares will deliver medical aid to help Haiti, from anywhere in the world in every way we can.”

AmeriCares relief staff is also in the Dominican Republic preparing to send a convoy of trucks to deliver aid to hospitals treating Haitian refugees near the border of the two countries. The convoy will continue on to Haiti to bring additional medicines and relief supplies to hospitals and major health care facilities treating earthquake survivors.

Meanwhile, teams at AmeriCares U.S. headquarters in Stamford, Conn. and offices in El Salvador are planning a second emergency airlift, delivering more than 3 million bottles of water as well as water purification solutions to Haiti, which are desperately needed. And our product donors in the United States, Latin America, Europe and India are sending additional donations of medical aid to AmeriCares warehouses to support our ongoing deliveries. AmeriCares is poised and ready to restore health and save lives in Haiti for the days, weeks, months and years to come.

AmeriCares has been providing humanitarian aid to Haiti since 1984, partnering with local health care organizations throughout the country. Over the years, we have delivered more than $145 million worth of medical aid and humanitarian relief to Haiti.
