Typhoon Ketsana barraged the Philippines this weekend, pouring more than 16 inches of rainfall in a 24-hour period. More than 240 people perished and countless others were injured in the country’s worst disaster in over 40 years.

Massive flooding in and around the capital city of Manila left 320,000 homeless and has affected 2 million men, women and children. Response efforts have been difficult and many remain stranded on their rooftops.

AmeriCares is working with our partners in the Philippines on a comprehensive disaster response to Typhoon Ketsana, locally known by Filipinos as Ondoy. AmeriCares recently shipped $3.2 million worth of medical aid to the Philippines including antibiotics, pain killers, fever reducers, syringes, medical supplies, hand sanitizers and other lifesaving medications which can be used to help survivors.
“As flood waters begin to recede and search and rescue operations are completed, the immediate health concerns will be illnesses such as cholera, dysentery and other potentially deadly water-borne diseases,” said Dr. Frank Bia, MD, AmeriCares medical director. “Many of the medicines and supplies recently delivered can be used to combat such anticipated disease outbreaks.”
AmeriCares is also working with local partners to assess health care facilities to determine the impact of the typhoon and to plan additional deliveries of medicines and supplies.
The fierce storm is headed toward Vietnam and is expected to make landfall in the coming days. AmeriCares stands ready to respond with additional medical assistance.
