Tropical Storm Penha (Basyang)

STATUS
Active Emergency
DATE
February 10, 2026
REGION
Philippines

Tropical Storm Penha made multiple landfalls in the Philippines from Feb. 5-6, 2026, bringing major flooding, dangerous landslides and widespread damage across the Mindanao and Visayas regions.

More than 645,000 people were affected and over 1,300 houses were damaged by the storm known locally as Tropical Storm Basyang, according to the Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Dozens of people were reported injured, and 12 deaths were attributed to the storm as of Feb. 10. Continued rain disrupted transportation and heightened concerns about flooding and the potential spread of waterborne disease in the days following the storm.

Americares is responding and has deployed teams based in the Philippines to Surigao del Sur. Four mobile teams will provide mental health support, while other team members will deliver medicine to rural health units, distribute hygiene kits to displaced families and conduct hygiene promotion sessions in affected communities.
