Stamford, Conn. June 23, 2022 – Americares is preparing to respond to the devastating 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Afghanistan’s Paktika province yesterday, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring more than 1,500 others, according to the head of Paktika province’s information and culture department. The quake was Afghanistan’s deadliest in two decades and local officials expect the death toll and the number of injured to rise as search and rescue efforts continue. The full extent of the quake’s destruction is still unknown as roads were badly damaged and landslides from recent rains have made access in remote villages even more difficult.

Americares is planning to send critically needed medicines and relief supplies, including blankets, tents and cooking supplies, to support survivors. The health-focused relief and development organization is also prepared to provide emergency funding to local health partners working in the region to help restore health services in affected communities.

“This devastating earthquake comes at a time when the country is reeling from a severe economic crisis, widespread hunger and extreme drought, exacerbating the health needs of families across the region,” said Americares Director of International Emergency Response Cora Nally. “The medicine and relief supplies we will be providing will be put to use immediately to help survivors recover.”

Americares has been providing assistance to Afghanistan since 1986, delivering medicine, medical supplies and relief items in response to emergencies and ongoing needs.

Americares helps communities prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters; increase access, availability, affordability and acceptability of medicine and medical supplies; improve and expand clinical services; and prevent disease and promote good health.

The organization responds to more than 30 natural disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide each year, establishes long-term recovery projects and brings preparedness programs to communities vulnerable to disasters. Since its founding more than 40 years ago, Americares has provided more than $20 billion in aid to 164 countries, including the United States.
