OdysseyRe Foundation Donates $2 Million to AmeriCares

  • August 7, 2014

Stamford, Conn. – August 7, 2014 – The OdysseyRe Foundation has committed $2 million over the next five years to support AmeriCares disaster response work and the AmeriCares Free Clinics in Connecticut. The majority of the funding – $1.5 million – will ensure access to care for low-income Fairfield County residents without health insurance. It includes operating support for the Weisman AmeriCares Free Clinic of Bridgeport and the Bob Macauley AmeriCares Free Clinic of Norwalk, as well as the new AmeriCares mobile clinic in Stamford where the global reinsurance company is based. The free clinics provide quality, comprehensive outpatient care for the working poor in a setting where all patients are treated with dignity and respect.

The gift also provides $500,000 in dedicated support for AmeriCares Emergency Response Program, which aids survivors of catastrophic earthquakes, cyclones, floods, disease outbreaks and other emergencies worldwide. An AmeriCares Annual Emergency Response Partner, OdysseyRe ensures AmeriCares has the capabilities to conduct needs assessments, pre-position relief supplies in disaster-prone countries, deploy emergency teams to disaster zones, and stock emergency medicines in its warehouses in the U.S., Haiti, Europe and India. In 2013, AmeriCares responded to 37 emergencies in 25 countries including the Haiti cholera epidemic, flooding in northern India and the Moore, Oklahoma, tornadoes.

“OdysseyRe shares the AmeriCares mission to help people in crisis, whether they are suffering amid disasters or devastating poverty,” said Brian Young, CEO of OdysseyRe. “Our multi-year support will ensure AmeriCares has the capabilities to restore health, reduce suffering and save lives in the years ahead.”

OdysseyRe is one of AmeriCares strongest corporate supporters, donating $6 million to the global health and disaster relief organization through the OdysseyRe Foundation since 2007. OdysseyRe employees have also personally contributed to AmeriCares, volunteering their time at the aid organization’s Stamford headquarters after the 2010 Haiti earthquake and providing critical funding to support its aid programs worldwide.
