When Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico on September 18, 2017, the massive storm’s 155 mph winds tore off roofs and cut the island’s power supply, while torrential rain flooded communities. Puerto Rico’s 3.3 million residents were without power for months and many had no water. Survivors sought health care in damaged health centers operating on generators. Americares immediate response included airlifts of medicine and medical supplies, mobile medical teams for vulnerable patients in remote communities, support for damaged health centers and transportation for patients in need of critical care. Americares long-term recovery activities focus on mental health and disaster preparedness, with the goal of a fully recovered and more resilient Puerto Rico.
