AfricaAmeriCares began operations in Africa in 1985 when a severe famine in Ethiopia led the organization to initiate numerous humanitarian missions to the region. A succession of relief efforts throughout Africa has continued over the past two decades. In 1994, AmeriCares established a field hospital in Rwanda after civil strife left massive populations in need of medical services. Currently, AmeriCares delivers regular shipments of medicines and medical supplies to support clinics and hospitals in a number of countries, including Ethiopia, Malawi, Senegal, and Tanzania. An ongoing response to the humanitarian crisis in Darfur and neighboring Chad has been underway since 2004. In addition, AmeriCares has been active in providing relief to areas of food crisis, including Malawi and Niger, and is involved in an initiative to eradicate trachoma, a preventable disease that threatens to blind nearly 10 percent of the world's population. |
