As Americares Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Specialist, Dr. Miguel E. Marrero-Medina is responsible for designing, implementing and managing mental and behavioral health programs that expand access to mental health and psychosocial services for underserved populations in the U.S. and around the world. He also plays a key role in building country-specific mental health trainings for health care providers, emergency responders and communities disproportionately affected by manmade and natural disasters.
Since joining Americares in 2017, Dr. Marrero-Medina has also been on the frontlines of several of the organization’s emergency response and recovery efforts including Hurricanes Irma, Maria, Michael, Ida and Fiona, the 2020 earthquakes in Puerto Rico, the Colombia-Venezuela regional crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, among other emergencies.
Dr. Marrero-Medina earned an advanced studies degree and a PhD in cognitive psychology from the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. He also holds a master’s degree in public health with a concentration in health education and disease prevention from Benedictine University in Chicago, a master’s in psycho-oncology from the Miguel de Cervantes European University in Spain and a master’s in counseling psychology from the Ana G. Méndez University in Puerto Rico. At the same time, Dr. Marrero-Medina completed the ‘Global Mental Health: Trauma & Recovery’ graduate certificate from Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Marrero-Medina currently serves as a faculty member for the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine’s public health program in Caguas, Puerto Rico. He also serves as a faculty member for the psychology and social sciences programs at the University of Puerto Rico’s Rio Piedras and Carolina campuses.
