Tropical Cyclone Idai has affected more than 1.5 million people in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, and has killed more than 300 people with many more deaths feared as rescue operations continue. Logistical challenges, including flooded roads and damaged bridges, have cut-off towns, making it difficult for assessment teams to access affected areas. Beira has a population of more than 530,000 people and is not typically affected by cyclones of this strength. The destruction in the city and the surrounding area is devastating according to early reports with much of Beira destroyed or damaged. Continuing rains and flooding and extensive damage to infrastructure have severely hampered relief efforts.
The Americares Emergency Response Team is in communication with partners in Mozambique and Malawi and is sending a initial shipment of hygiene kits to a longtime partner to support their response. The team continues to assess the situation as more reports of the severity of the disaster come in and is preparing to expand our response.
