Patagonia has long been a supporter of Americares mission to respond to people affected by crisis and poverty, joining its Annual Emergency Response Partner(AERP) program in 2016. As a member of the AERP program, Patagonia provides multiyear financial support to build Americares emergency response capability in advance of disasters. This commitment makes Patagonia a partner in every disaster response Americares launches, typically more than 30 annually.

Beginning in 1990, Patagonia has donated clothing to Americares to meet the needs of our local partners and people in the communities they serve. After the Nepal earthquake in April 2015, the company contributed $50,000 towards Americares robust response to the disaster, which included delivering medicines and supplies, traveling to remote Nepalese villages to provide medical care and addressing the mental health and rehabilitation needs of survivors.

Our deepening partnership comes at a time when urbanization, climate change, environmental degradation and humanitarian crises are increasing the number and severity of natural disasters worldwide. Current estimates suggest such emergencies devastate 200 million people annually, predominately in low-income communities.

“As an outdoor apparel company that started out making tools for mountain climbers, Patagonia has long acknowledged its corporate responsibility to protect the natural world and give back to the communities that businesses affect,” says Lisa Pike Sheehy, VP of Environmental Activism at Patagonia. “Partnering with Americares fits with Patagonia’s mission to use our business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.”

Patagonia recognizes its manufacturing processes use resources and produce waste and sees its philanthropic work—a company-described “Earth Tax”—as part of the cost of doing business. The company donated $7.1 million to fund environmental work in fiscal year 2016, totaling $78 million in cash and in-kind services since 1985.
