The OdysseyRe Foundation and Americares have worked together since 2007 to respond to health crises worldwide, bring health care to uninsured and underinsured people and mitigate the impact of natural disasters. The Foundation initially championed Americares Free Clinics in Norwalk and Bridgeport, Conn., and was also an early proponent of establishing a new clinic to serve low-income, uninsured Stamford residents. While the Stamford mobile clinic was being developed, the OdysseyRe Foundation broadened its reach to include our U.S. Medical Assistance Program and now provides critical support to more than 800 free and charitable clinics that Americares partners with in all 50 states.
Additionally, the OdysseyRe Foundation supports Americares relief efforts for disasters, as well as related disaster preparedness and long-term recovery work. As a result of the Foundation’s swift and generous response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Americares was able to airlift and distribute medicines and relief supplies to severely damaged health facilities. The Foundation’s support also helped Americares carry out long-term recovery efforts in the impoverished country.
“As a leading company in the global insurance industry, we know firsthand how devastating natural disasters can be and it is intuitive for our organization and our employees to want to help,” said Janine Walter, Grants Review Officer of the OdysseyRe Foundation. “We are very proud to support Americares disaster relief efforts as well as its valuable medical assistance programs.”
In 2013, OdysseyRe became a member of our Annual Emergency Response Partner (AERP) Program. AERPs provide multiyear financial support to build AmeriCares emergency response capability in advance of disaster events. OdysseyRe’s support makes the company a participant in every disaster response Americares launches. It enables our emergency response team to monitor potential crises, conduct in-country assessments following disasters in coordination with local partners and government agencies, pre-position medicines and relief aid in disaster-prone regions, and maintain emergency pharmacy inventory at our headquarters, regional warehouse and distribution hubs.
The company’s dedication to philanthropy is also reflected in the efforts of its staff. OdysseyRe employees have directly engaged in the work that Americares does to provide health care and medications to safety net patients throughout the United States and respond to emergencies worldwide. They have supported our headquarters staff during our responses to major emergencies, volunteered at local fundraising events and run the New York City marathon as leading members of Team Americares.
The OdysseyRe Foundation was formed in 2007 by Odyssey Re Holdings Corp. to provide funding to charitable organizations active in communities in which OdysseyRe employees live and work, as well as to charitable organizations dedicated to worldwide disaster relief efforts. Since its inception, the OdysseyRe Foundation has proudly supported a wide range of programs focused on health, education, human services, arts and culture, the environment and the elderly. In addition, it supports disaster relief programs that help rebuild homes, schools and hospitals, as well as programs that provide medical supplies, improve access to food and water, assist with community mobilization and enable economic recovery.
