Recent monsoon rains have triggered severe flooding in India’s Assam state, affecting more than 2.4 million people in 24 of the 33 districts. As of Monday, July 21, 44,498 displaced persons are taking shelter in 397 relief camps across the state. The Barpeta district has emerged as one of the worst affected districts.

One of the NGO emergency roster partners of Americares India, has assessed the damage and the need in the region.  The Americares India partner will distribute 2,000 prepositioned hygiene kits to displaced families in the Barpeta districts on behalf of the Americares India emergency team.  As the team continues to manage its response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which continues its deadly spread in India, it is also responding to the seasonal extreme weather events that plunge vulnerable communities into crisis.
