Stamford, Conn. – April 11, 2018 – Americares, the health-focused relief and development organization, today announced the promotion of Dr. Julie Varughese to chief medical officer and technical unit vice president. In her new role, Dr. Varughese helps shape health-focused initiatives that increase access to quality medicine for low-income and uninsured patients worldwide, provides medical oversight and reviews offers of donated products from over 200 pharmaceutical and medical supply companies. She also leads a team of experts who provide guidance in areas such as monitoring and evaluation, nutrition and medical outreach best practices.
“Dr. Varughese has a wealth of experience and a proven track record as a medical expert that’s integral to Americares mission of saving lives and improving health for people affected by poverty or disaster,” said Americares President and CEO Michael J. Nyenhuis.
Since joining Americares in 2015, Dr. Varughese has traveled to Cambodia, El Salvador, Haiti, India and Tanzania to implement life-changing health programs and deliver quality medicine and medical supplies. Previously, Dr. Varughese served as a clinical infectious disease attending at Norwalk Medical Group and Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut and worked in Norwalk Community Health Center’s HIV clinic. Dr. Varughese has also participated in medical missions to India and South Africa, researched breastfeeding practices and infant health in Ecuador and worked in primary care and school-based health education in Guatemala.
“I am excited to take on the role of vice president of Americares technical unit and look forward to expanding our work improving health outcomes for patients in need worldwide,” Dr. Varughese said.
Board certified in infectious disease, internal medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Varughese earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., and a medical degree from Rush University in Chicago, Ill., where she completed her residency training. She also completed an infectious disease fellowship at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY.
