AmeriCares

Remembering Rwanda – 20 Years Later

April, 2014 marks 20 years since the tragic ethnic violence and genocide in Rwanda. In 1994, AmeriCares deployed emergency relief teams including doctors and nurses, and organized the first of six airlifts to stave off an impending public health catastrophe in the refugee camps. We also managed an orphanage in Goma that took in more than 350 orphans, most of whose parents had died of cholera. In August of that year, we constructed field hospitals in Buranga that provided crucial medical treatment to returning refugees who suffered from illness, injury, and malnutrition.
