AmeriCares 25th Anniversary:
In May, AmeriCares celebrated 25 years of delivering medical relief and humanitarian aid to people around the world wherever they are, whenever they need it. To date, AmeriCares has delivered over $7 billion in aid to 137 countries. AmeriCares founders Bob and Leila Macauley, along with President & CEO, Curt Welling, joined over 600 supporters and friends in celebration of the organizations work.
Kosovo:
As part of its ongoing medical assistance initiative, AmeriCares supports a neonatal program at the University of Pristina Medical Hospital in Kosovo. Since our program began a year and a half ago, infant mortality rates have dropped significantly and the medicines and medical supplies donated by AmeriCares have helped save the lives of premature babies in the country. Here, Dr. Hoyha, director of neonatology at the university hospital, checks on one of her most vulnerable patients.
Pakistan:
AmeriCares has been integrally involved in rebuilding the country's health care system which was destroyed by the October 2005 earthquake. AmeriCares partnered with the World Heath Organization to construct 20 rural health centers and helped build semi-permanent structures that house health care clinics in areas devastated by the earthquake.
Bangladesh:
After Cyclone Sidr hit Bangladesh in mid-November, AmeriCares emergency medicines and medical supplies were distributed to the remote towns that suffered the most damage, including the Barisal region in the southern part of the country. AmeriCares was able to deliver donated medicines to its partner in the affected areas just a week after the disaster. Two emergency shipments were immediately sent, the first arriving in country on Thanksgiving Day and the second arriving two days later.
Bolivia:
When rains flooded communities in Bolivia in March, AmeriCares responded by delivering an emergency shipment of medicines valued at more than $730,000. Nearly 400,000 people were affected by the floods and over 25,000 were left homeless.
India:
In September, AmeriCares provided medicines and syringes in support of a rubella vaccination program for 55,000 adolescent girls in the rural district of Maharashtra, India. The vaccine will help prevent stillbirths, miscarriages and other birth defects which can occur when a woman is exposed to rubella.
Sri Lanka:
Nearly three years after the tsunami struck Southeast Asia, AmeriCares continued with its reconstruction and ongoing relief activities. In June, AmeriCares helped celebrate the opening of one of eleven new schools it funded as part of a school reconstruction project.
Mexico:
In November, Mexico experienced one of the worst natural disasters in its history. Heavy rains flooded three rivers surrounding the town of Villahermosa in the southern state of Tabasco forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. AmeriCares responded to the disaster immediately by sending an emergency shipment of essential aid to Mexico City. The relief included antibiotics, anti-fungals, basic medicines, supplies and blankets. As the risk to skin and water-borne diseases is high during a flooding disaster, the AmeriCares response helped meet the most pressing health care needs of those affected in the devastated communities.
Mozambique:
In response to the devastating floods that affected Mozambique in March, AmeriCares provided a $200,000 grant for a three-month program to respond to both the immediate problems of deteriorating hygiene and sanitary conditions and the longer term needs of rehabilitating the devastated community so they can return to adequate living conditions. The AmeriCares grant helped nearly 25,000 displaced people, including the ability to access clean drinking water.
Nicaragua/Honduras:
In the aftermath of Hurricane Felix, which left much destruction after ripping through the Caribbean in September, AmeriCares sent an emergency airlift of critical medicines and aid to help the people affected in Nicaragua and Honduras. The shipments of vital medicines and supplies were airlifted from Miami, arriving in Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, and Tegucigalpa, Honduras, two areas affected by the hurricane. The emergency aid included antibiotics, pain relievers, hygiene products and other medicines and supplies.
Peru:
AmeriCares launched an emergency airlift of essential medicines and aid to help the tens of thousands of people affected by the devastating earthquake that hit Peru in August. More than 25-thousand pounds of aid from AmeriCares, including antibiotics, rehydration solutions, blankets and gloves were sent to Pisco, Peru, and surrounding rural areas devastated by the earthquake.

Darfur:
Throughout the year, AmeriCares delivered vital medicines and supplies to the people affected by the conflict in Darfur, Sudan, via airlifts directly into the country. Many of the clinics operating in refugee camps rely heavily on AmeriCares donations to serve their patients. AmeriCares is currently planning its tenth airlift into Darfur since 2004 and intends to send a series of shipments throughout 2008.
Greensburg, Kansas:
In early May a tornado flattened the entire town of Greensburg, Kansas. AmeriCares responded immediately with emergency relief supplies. AmeriCares staff and volunteers also worked in the community to build a semi-permanent Sprung structure used to store building and other supplies used in the ongoing reconstruction efforts.
Hurricane Katrina:
AmeriCares continues to support the recovery and reconstruction efforts in the Gulf Coast as residents rebuild their lives and communities more than two years after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the region. In addition to providing mobile medical and dental units in Mississippi and providing funding to help relocate the Blood Center in New Orleans, AmeriCares volunteers have helped build KaBoom! playgrounds in local communities. The latest playground was built in Creole, Louisiana.

U.S.A.
The Weisman Clinic, an AmeriCares Free Clinic, opened its newest location in Bridgeport, CT, in September, to a crowd of nearly 100 onlookers including the city's mayor, John Fabrizi. The clinic, one of three run by AmeriCares Free Clinics, has been providing free health care to the uninsured from a mobile medical unit since 2003. The new permanent location in Bridgeport features five examination rooms, and as a result will be able to expand its operations. The other two locations are in Norwalk and Danbury.
