Read More About Paraguay:
Emergency Response and Disaster Relief
In January of 2007, AmeriCares sent an emergency airlift to help treat victims of a deadly dengue fever outbreak. More than 18,000 people contracted the mosquito-borne disease and dozens of lives were lost.
The dengue virus causes high fever, headache, muscle and joint pain - and can lead to fatal internal bleeding. AmeriCares sent fever-reducing medicines and medical supplies to help people suffering from the deadly disease.
Medical and Humanitarian Aid
Since 2007, AmeriCares has delivered more than $65 million worth of medicines, medical supplies and equipment to Paraguay.
AmeriCares works in partnership with the National Cancer Coalition (NCC), a US-based organization with local distribution throughout Paraguay. Medicines and medical supplies provided by AmeriCares help support over 80 public health institutions, ranging major referral hospitals to small rural clinics.
The NCC supports thousands of patients with cancer and other chronic diseases requiring ongoing medical care. In 2009, AmeriCares and the NCC provided a major donation of lifesaving breast cancer drugs to Paraguay's National Institute of Cancer.
Due to inadequate funding, Paraguay's National Institute of Cancer experiences frequent shortages of important medicines. That's why AmeriCares continues to support NCC's work in Paraguay and throughout Latin America, with ongoing medical assistance, including 5 shipments totaling over $8 million worth of aid in 2008.
