While Mexico continues on a path of economic growth, deep pockets of poverty remain and limit access to quality health care. In fact, nearly 20% of the population lives on $1 or less per day. Mexican families living in extreme poverty face challenging health issues include conditions related to lifestyle changes brought on by recent growth including diabetes and heart disease. At the same time, they battle health problems related to poverty and a lack of medicine, such as high rates of illness and injuries in newborn babies. Easily treated conditions such as diarrhea and simple infections can be fatal without access to basic medicines. That's why AmeriCares carries on its 20 year commitment to our neighbors in Mexico.

Medical and Humanitarian Aid
Since 1989, AmeriCares has delivered more than $170 million worth of medicines, medical supplies and humanitarian aid to Mexico. In partnership with the Mexican Association of Malta, AmeriCares has been able to serve people who have fallen through the gaps despite economic and social reforms. For health care providers serving the country's poorest communities, donated medicines and medical supplies play a critical role in protecting heath and improving outcomes.
Today, AmeriCares and the Mexican Association of Malta deliver product assistance to over 75 hospitals, clinics and community health programs. Two specific pediatric programs speak to the range of life-changing care delivered through our beneficiary network:
- Save a Children from HIV/AIDS(Salva un Niño de SIDA) is dedicated to the prevention of mother-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. Through a grassroots network of hospitals, clinics and health care providers, the program identifies mothers with HIV and oversees all medical care in an effort to prevent vertical HIV transmission.
- Help Me Grow (Ayudame a Crecer) serves nearly 3,000 children at risk of or suffering from malnutrition in Mexico's poor rural areas. As a key supporter, AmeriCares regularly delivers nutritional supplements and vitamins for the program.
