Ecuador is located along the equator and South America's coastline, bordered by Colombia and Peru. Half the people of Ecuador live in poverty, particularly rural communities isolated from the resources of larger towns and cities. Less than a third of Ecuador's 13 million citizens receive medical treatment from the government-sponsored health care system.
The leading cause of death in Ecuador is heart disease, a treatable condition. Extreme rates of malnutrition, respiratory infections, malaria and diabetes persist in remote regions, where lack of access to basic medical care can make even relatively manageable diseases life-threatening.

Emergency Response and Disaster Relief
AmeriCares has a long history of helping Ecuador with emergency response and disaster relief. In March 1987, AmeriCares delivered critical medicines and medical supplies to survivors of a devastating earthquake in the Napo province, a remote region containing part of the Amazon Rainforest.
In February 2008, AmeriCares responded to flash flooding in collaboration with the Ecuadorian Civil Defense and Ecuadorian Consulate. For this response, AmeriCares supplied and coordinated the delivery of antibiotics, medicine to treat pain and infections, blankets and other humanitarian aid to shelters and medical camps across 8 provinces.
Medical and Humanitarian Aid
Since 1987, AmeriCares has provided more than $60 million worth of medical aid and humanitarian relief to Ecuador. AmeriCares has worked closely with in-country partner Junta de Beneficencia de Guayaquil (JBG) since 2005. Founded in 1888, JBG operates as a private institution whose mission is “to provide care and social welfare services for the needy.” JBG manages four major hospitals and schools intended to promote children’s health and development. JBC also sponsors two homes for the elderly in the Guayaquil region.
AmeriCares has donated more than $11 million worth of aid to JBG's health care services, enabling JBC to provide for more than 1 million patient visits per year. Health services offered by JBC include primary care, maternal care, pediatrics and mental health.
