Emergency Aid and Disaster Relief
AmeriCares started working in Armenia in December 1988, when the devastating Spitak Earthquake struck. The 6.9-magnitude earthquake killed 25,000 people and left 500,000 others homeless. As the first humanitarian aid group to respond to the earthquake, AmeriCares sent an airlift within 24 hours of the catastrophe.
Over the next year, AmeriCares delivered six additional airlifts bringing the total amount of relief delivered to $13 million. In addition, AmeriCares established a surgical unit and a prosthetics clinic to treat the victims; and dozens of earthquake survivors were brought to the United States for specialized surgeries not available in their own country.
Medical and Humanitarian Aid
AmeriCares supports health care facilities that serve approximately 85% of Armenia's 3 million people. The donated medicines and medical supplies have been distributed to hospitals, health clinics, orphanages and other programs across the country.
In the last two years, AmeriCares delivered 30 shipments to our partner, the United Armenia Fund (UAF) carrying medicines and supplies worth more than $20 million. AmeriCares has partnered with the UAF since 1992. Working closely with the Armenian Ministry of Health (MOH), UAF distributes medical aid to health care facilities throughout the country.
