AmeriCares began delivering aid to Eurasia in the late 1980s. As part of its humanitarian outreach to Europe, AmeriCares has supplied emergency assistance as well as ongoing support to Belarus and Ukraine, two countries that were heavily affected by the radioactive fallout of Chernobyl in 1986.
AmeriCares has a long history of responding to natural disasters in this region. In 1988, AmeriCares was the first humanitarian organization to respond to the deadly Armenian earthquake, and in 2002 AmeriCares played a vital role in aiding the flood victims of the Czech Republic.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, AmeriCares filled the gap in access to medicines in Eastern European countries, particularly in Armenia and Bulgaria.
Most recently, AmeriCares' activities in Eurasia have focused on special initiatives that include supporting a clinic for children with HIV/ AIDS in Romania and partnering with Dartmouth Medical School to improve orthopedic surgery and maternal and child health care in Kosovo.
