Dominican Republic: AmeriCares Medical Aid and Emergency Relief

The Dominican Republic is a small island nation sharing a western border with Haiti. Plagued by poverty and limited health care resources, the country's disease burden is alarmingly high. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), malnutrition and treatable diseases such as diarrhea, malaria and typhoid fever contribute to the majority of deaths among children. In addition to basic medical concerns, frequent natural disasters pose great health care challenges. Located near a Caribbean – Atlantic fault line, the Dominican Republic is often hard hit by hurricanes, floods and earthquakes.

Emergency Aid and Disaster Response

AmeriCares has a long history of responding to natural disasters in the Dominican Republic. In November 2007 Tropical Storm Noel caused heavy rains, flooding and mudslides. In response, AmeriCares delivered an emergency airlift of vital medicines and supplies valued at more than $2 million. These medicines provided critical aid to people affected by the torrential storms and their aftermath.

In May 2004, the town of Jimani was flattened when flash floods sent rocks, mud and other debris down the mountain in the middle of the night. An AmeriCares emergency team was immediately dispatched for evaluation, followed by an emergency airlift of life-saving relief supplies worth $1 million.

AmeriCares responded to a severe drought in 1997 with aid for our partner hospitals and clinics. That same year, Joaquin Balaguer, then president of the Dominican Republic, honored AmeriCares Founder and Chairman Bob Macauley with the rank of Commander in the Heraldic Order of Christopher Columbus.

Medical and Humanitarian Aid

Since 1990, AmeriCares has delivered $390 million worth of aid to the Dominican Republic, including medical aid delivered through a long-standing partnership with the Dominican Association of the Order of Malta.

AmeriCares medical assistance reaches 150 health care facilities each year including regional hospitals and specialty care facilities, primary care clinics, homes for the young and the elderly, and mobile medical teams that provide care to rural communities and Haitian refugees. According to the World Health Organization, nearly half of Dominican people live without access to essential medicines, making AmeriCares regular deliveries of medical supplies far-reaching and critical for care.
