Democratic People's Republic of Korea: AmeriCares Medical Aid and Humanitarian Relief

In 1997, AmeriCares responded to appeals for humanitarian assistance to aid millions of North Koreans suffering from consecutive years of severe flooding and consequent famine. At that time, we delivered three airlifts carrying more than $20 million worth of nutritional supplements, medicines and medical supplies to North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). AmeriCares airlift was the first direct civilian flight from the U.S. to the DPRK since before the Korean War.

AmeriCares began sending regular shipments of assistance to support the provision of health services in North Korea in 2000. Despite the challenging political context, AmeriCares — in its mission to help people in need irrespective of their race, creed or political persuasion — is committed to helping the people of North Korea, who have suffered from acute food shortages, natural disasters and isolation.

Global Medical Assistance Program

Six Hospitals and Clinics Care for Patients with Medical Supplies from AmeriCares
Through AmeriCares Global Medical Assistance program, we deliver medicine and medical supplies to DPRK four to five times a year in partnership with the Korea-America Private Exchange Society (KAPES). KAPES is an agency responsible for receiving foreign aid delegations and managing ongoing relationships with recipient institutions on the ground in DPRK. Through KAPES, AmeriCares helps to stock empty pharmacy shelves at six hospitals and clinics in the Pyongyang, North Hwanghae and South Pyongyang regions.

As with all of its ongoing operations overseas, AmeriCares staff conducts site visits once or twice a year to oversee our work in DPRK. We coordinate our assistance with the World Health Organization and other aid agencies and closely observe the United States Bureau of Industry and Security regulations for exports to DPRK.

Emergency Response Program

Emergency Response for Severe Flooding in 2007
In August and December of 2007, AmeriCares contributed medicines and supplies to a UN-lead effort to provide assistance to victims of severe flooding in the southern half of DPRK. This devastating flooding affected hundreds of thousands and destroyed some of the most productive agricultural land in the country.
