Bangladesh: AmeriCares Medical Aid and Emergency Relief

Bangladesh is a densely populated country encircled by a border with India and a coastline on the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh's geographical location is prone to cyclones and seasonal monsoons, and the region frequently experiences catastrophic flooding. The people of Bangladesh have high rates of malnutrition, with nearly 2 out of 3 people suffering from a nutritional deficiency. The leading causes of death – diarrheal diseases and respiratory infections such as pneumonia – are preventable and treatable.

Rural regions are extremely isolated and excluded from medical services; urban areas continue to experience unplanned and unregulated population growth. Poor sanitation contributed to the spread of disease. Fewer than one in ten children have access to proper medical care.

Emergency Aid and Disaster Response

In November 2007, AmeriCares contributed $1.6 million of emergency medicines and medical supplies to be distributed throughout coastal regions devastated by Cyclone Sidr. Cyclone Sidr remains the strongest recorded cyclone to occur in the Bay of Bengal. The Barisal District, located in southern Bangladesh, suffered the greatest amount of destruction from the cyclone’s violent winds and flash flooding.  The contributed aid included medicine and medical equipment for the treatment of injuries, pain, fever, respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal diseases and antibiotics.

Medical and Humanitarian Aid

Since 2002, AmeriCares has delivered more than $7 million worth of medical aid and humanitarian relief to Bangladesh. AmeriCares has worked with Parbatya Bouddha Mission (PBM). PBM provides health and social services for disadvantaged individuals in the southeast territory formerly known as Burma. AmeriCares donations enable PBM to support a primary health care clinic, an orphanage, and medical outreach missions. These programs serve over 14,500 people.

Cyclone Sidr and subsequent flooding caused extensive damage to PBM's facilities. The destruction of PMB's sponsored orphanage, school, vocational training center and clinic required more than the organization's resources for repair. AmeriCares provided a cash grant for the recovery and replacement of critical program infrastructure, including the repair of the area's only ambulance, medical equipment, stored food grains and an electric generator.

In 2004, AmeriCares partnered with the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) in support of a water purification initiative. AmeriCares provided a grant of $37,000 and a donation of PŪR™ sachets valuing $40,000. This contribution allowed for members of BRAC’s women’s microfinance collective to receive training in water filtration techniques and education on the importance of water purification.
