Afghanistan: AmeriCares Medical Aid and Emergency Relief

Afghanistan’s history is marked by civil war, violence and instability, all of which have derailed the economic growth of the country and hindered the establishment of strong health care services.

The World Health Organization estimates that approximately half of Afghanistan’s people lack access to essential medicines. Diseases and conditions that reflect an underdeveloped health system constitute the leading causes of morbidity: complications arising from pregnancy and child birth, lower respiratory infections, tuberculosis and diarrheal disease. With the persistence of conflict throughout the country, addressing injuries and physical and psychological health conditions related to trauma has become a pressing issue in Afghanistan.

Recent Aid to Afghanistan

Recent aid to Afghanistan includes medical supplies and disinfectants for health care facilities, vaccines, and medicines to treat pain, fever, infection, diabetes, eye infections, burns and skin infections and chronic diseases.

Medical Assistance and Emergency Relief

AmeriCares regular shipments of medicines and medical supplies to Afghanistan support primary health care, trauma care, and maternal and child health services throughout the country. Through its partnership with Help the Afghan Children (HTAC) and HTAC’s sister organization, Afghan Health and Development Services (AHDS), AmeriCares humanitarian aid reaches indigent and vulnerable populations served by hospitals, clinics, schools and refugee camps. AmeriCares donated medicines and supplies support maternal and child health care, injury and trauma care, and primary health care. AmeriCares shipment to Afghanistan in early 2008, valued at $5.2 million, included antibiotics, anti-fungals, neonatal supplies, prenatal vitamins and general medical supplies.

HTAC and AHDS are committed to providing health services “free of politics or partisanship” and, as a result, are the medical providers of preference for many patients living in active conflict zones. Likewise, AmeriCares is a key partner of HTAC, providing in-kind support for both HTAC’s ongoing educational and humanitarian programs and its emergency relief efforts.

AmeriCares has been active in Afghanistan since 1988. Since 2002, our ongoing aid to the country has totaled more than 230 tons of medicines, medical supplies, and humanitarian relief, valued at $28 million.

In addition to providing aid on an ongoing basis, we also have delivered several emergency shipments including one in 2001 to help residents uprooted by intense military activity in the northern region.

In conflict situations, such as the ongoing violence in Afghanistan, fewer and fewer resources have been available to provide for the health and welfare of women and children. To address this issue, AmeriCares recently sent a shipment of medical aid weighing nearly eight tons and valued at over $5.2 million to support the ever-growing health care and medical needs of this vulnerable population.

“There is an increasing need to support the health care issues of women and children in Afghanistan, many of whom still suffer from the legacy of the ongoing conflict,” says Jim O’Brien, AmeriCares Manager of Eurasia and Middle East Partnerships. “Without these medicines and supplies from AmeriCares, many of the most vulnerable populations would go without the care they need.”

The shipment includes medicines and medical supplies, including antibiotics, antifungals, neonatal supplies, prenatal vitamins, general medical supplies, as well as toys and children’s books. Our partners on the ground, Help the Afghan Children, will distribute our donation to clinics and hospitals through their sister organization, Afghan Health Development Services.
