  • Communicable diseases – especially parasitic diseases, diarrheal diseases and infections -- are leading causes of sickness and death.

  • Maternal, infant and child mortality rates are alarmingly high -- among the highest in the world

  • Malnutrition is widespread, especially in South Sudan.

  • Chronic diseases, including diabetes and hypertension have become emerging health concerns.

Country Overview

Founded in 1956, the nation of Sudan has struggled with cultural and religious conflicts for much of its existence. Ongoing clashes between the north and south have resulted in widespread death and destruction, especially in the western region of Darfur. Sudan’s civil strife has transformed Africa’s largest country (37 million people) into a nation of internally displaced persons. The Darfur region is the site of the world’s largest international humanitarian operation.

In 2011, South Sudan gained independence, leading to escalating conflict with Sudan over control of the region’s oil. This conflict has magnified the challenges for families in these desperately poor nations.

Aid History and Emergency Response

Our work in Sudan began with a 1987 emergency response to the escalating civil war. Since then, we have delivered hundreds of tons of aid to help refugees in the region. In 2004, we began a robust and prolonged relief effort, delivering medical aid to support health services for survivors of the deadly violence in Darfur.

Economic and political instability combined with a shortage of resources and basic services has left many people in Darfur completely reliant upon humanitarian assistance – especially the displaced still living in camps.

AmeriCares has delivered airlifts of medicine and supplies directly into Darfur, to provide immediate help to medical teams working in tough conditions. This aid replenished the dwindling stocks of clinics in 19 camps serving about 400,000 people, operated by international agencies and partners including the International Rescue Committee and Save the Children. In South Sudan, a young country in crisis, we continue to deliver crucial medical aid and provide support for the reconstruction of health services.

Medical Outreach

AmeriCares donates medical aid to U.S.-based volunteer health care teams traveling to Sudan, South Sudan and Darfur. These medicines and medical supplies reach impoverished and isolated communities where basic medical care is inaccessible or non-existent. AmeriCares donations cure infections, relieve pain, help patients manage chronic diseases and make life-changing surgeries possible. Read more »
