Liberia
AmeriCares has provided humanitarian aid to war-torn Liberia through partnerships with several organizations, including Africare to improve community health, Sprung Instant Structures to provide clinic structures, and the Rotary Club of Monrovia to distribute educational books throughout the country. Most recently, AmeriCares has worked with Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing to improve the supply of consumables, medicines and equipment for the regional hospital. In September 2003, AmeriCares began an ongoing aid initiative for Liberia in response to the precarious health situation in the region, where fourteen years of civil war had devastated the medical infrastructure and massive population displacement, severe poverty and a shortage of trained medical personnel had created a scarcity of quality healthcare. AmeriCares has airlifted critical medicines, medical supplies and equipment to Liberia and is currently working with Sprung Instant Structures to supply semi-permanent structures to house medical wards in Monrovia and Salala. Since July 2005, AmeriCares has donated nearly 45,000 lbs. of medicines, supplies and educational materials to our partners in Liberia valued at more than $3 million. AmeriCares ongoing partnership with Phebe Hospital has provided assistance in daily operations on the main campus as well as in outreach clinics throughout Bong County. |
