Our Work
Our presence in Chile has revolved primarily around emergency response, particularly the 2010 earthquake and tsunami. Our emergency shipments were followed by targeted assistance projects for rehabilitation and recovery of the health care system.
Snapshot of Chile:
Chile is one of the most economically stable countries in Latin America. Following its emergence from nearly two decades of authoritarian rule, it has also enjoyed political and social stability as well. Consistent economic policy has generated steady growth and greatly reduced poverty. With economic growth has come increased investment in health care.

Aid History
Since 1989, AmeriCares has delivered over $17 million in medical aid and humanitarian assistance to Chile. In addition to earthquake relief, our efforts have included shipments of disaster preparedness supplies, antibiotics, children's medications and specialized medicines to treat people with hemophilia.

Emergency Response
In February, 2010, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Chile, affecting 2 million people and leaving 9 percent of the population homeless and displaced. AmeriCares responded with emergency airlifts and shipments of medical and humanitarian aid, to help countless Chilean families in their time of greatest need.
AmeriCares disaster shipments to Chile have included 11,500 pounds of medical supplies, including bandages and masks to protect against dust and debris; personal hygiene items to prevent infection and disease; as well as flashlights and water containers to carry safe drinking water. A second relief shipment included medicines, surgical supplies and disaster relief for survivors.
After the earthquake and subsequent tsunami, AmeriCares continued its support, providing medical aid and assistance for health care rehabilitation efforts in the region.
Our aid helped re-stock pharmacy shelves to fill resource gaps and provided critical medical equipment to many affected hospitals and clinics; restored regional maternal and child health services through its fully-equipped transitional field hospital; assisted thousands of displaced families by distributing basic hygiene supplies; and supported the rebuilding of community-based mental health centers for victims.
