AmeriCares Medical Outreach Program equips U.S.-based volunteer medical teams traveling to some of the most impoverished areas of the world where even basic medical care may be non-existent or inaccessible. Recipients of AmeriCares donated medical supplies provide a range of health care services including surgeries, and have a profound impact on the quality of life and productivity of the people they treat. The program may also supplement an AmeriCares emergency response where the need for medical services and surgeries can overwhelm existing health care infrastructure.

U.S. medical volunteers using donated products from AmeriCares extend critical health care services outside of the U.S. Some teams travel to remote villages to provide primary health care and engage in health education. Others visit large cities where extreme poverty equally prevents access to care. AmeriCares also supports teams of highly skilled surgeons conducting sophisticated cardiovascular, orthopedic and reconstructive procedures at hospitals that may lack expertise or other essential resources.

All teams are led by U.S.-licensed health care providers who meet Medical Outreach Program eligibility requirements. They donate their services to treat some of the most disadvantaged people in the world and help transfer knowledge to strengthen local health care capabilities.

Last year, AmeriCares Medical Outreach Program provisioned more than 1,050 volunteer medical teams with over $40 million in medical and surgical supplies traveling to 83 countries, including over $8.6 million in support of AmeriCares emergency response initiatives in Haiti, Turkey and Somalia.
