Overview of Hurricane Katrina
Recovery Continues Three Years Later When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August of 2005, it affected millions of people across several states. AmeriCares responded as it always does – quickly and efficiently – launching an emergency response that delivered critically needed medicines, supported medical personnel and collaborated with local organizations to ensure maximum use of our resources. Early on in the recovery phase, it was apparent that a longer-term humanitarian response would be needed to aid Katrina survivors. Thanks to a generous outpouring of charitable contributions from across the country, as well as the support of our corporate and foundation partners, AmeriCares was able to initiate a $12 million program to aid the people of Louisiana and Mississippi. For three years, we have partnered with local organizations to provide health care, housing, volunteer support and a range of other “unmet needs” that continue to be present today.
