At the five-year mark, AmeriCares impact on communities across the Gulf Coast is tangible and lasting.   The caring and generosity of our donors is reflected in this cross section of some of our programs that made a difference in helping communities rebuild:

Coastal Family Clinic in Biloxi, Mississippi 
AmeriCares is funding a project for enhanced patient access to care at clinics, providing extended hours, improved patient service and expanded urgent diagnostic testing for patients who cannot afford such tests. More >>

Manna Ministries in Picayune, Mississippi
Americares funding is helping to increase the capacity of the free medical clinic to the low income, uninsured population in the area it serves. Through our support, the clinic will be able to extend clinic hours, and expand laboratory testing and supplies.

Supporting Back to School Vaccinations in Katrina-Affected Neighborhoods 
To help provide children with immunizations against childhood and other infectious diseases, AmeriCares donated a mobile medical unit to the Children's Hospital of New Orleans. The mobile medical unit helps support a free vaccine program throughout New Orleans in collaboration with local hospitals and community groups.   More >>

Home Reconstruction: Volunteers Building Homes
Three years after Hurricane Katrina, volunteers from across America continue to provide labor and bring hope to those who are still in need, and AmeriCares continues to support volunteer efforts in the Gulf Coast.  More >>

Child Health and Welfare: School Kids Immunization Program (SKIP)
When the New Orleans schools re-opened after Hurricane Katrina, nearly all the health records for returning children had been lost or destroyed. With the support of AmeriCares, the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans implemented the School Kids Immunization Program (SKIP).

Dental Care: Smiling in Mississippi
In the second half of 2006, AmeriCares funded the purchase of a mobile dental clinic for Coastal Family Health Services, which operates out of Biloxi.  In 2007, this mobile clinic operated five days a week and treated more than 3,500 people with dental needs, many of whom lacked health insurance.  More >>

Supporting Young People in New Orleans
Covenant House was one of the few organizations dealing with the mental health challenges for young people;  AmeriCares helped support staffing needs for this critically needed service.   More >>

Home Reconstruction: Community Participation in Mississippi
The Gulf Coast town of Pearlington, Mississippi, is located less than 40 miles northwest of New Orleans, along the Pear River.  When Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005, the eastern eye wall was directly over this rural town.  More  >>

A New Home for Child care in Biloxi
Moore Community House, which provides many services to Biloxi’s poorest neighborhoods, including a day care and other children's services lost many of their buildings in the hurricane.  With the support of AmeriCares, Moore was able to find interim space and return to providing child care in January 2007.  More >>

playground2thumb Child Care: A Place to Play in Pass Christian
One of the communities that lost its entire infrastructure was Mississippi’s Pass Christian.  AmeriCares donated two temporary structures used to store essential building supplies used by community groups helping to rebuild and repair houses.   More >>

AmeriCares Grants: Helping Communities Help Themselves
Nine months after Hurricane Katrina crossed the Gulf Coast, AmeriCares is continuing to bring help and hope to many of those who are continuing the recovery process, giving $6.3 million in grants to local organizations in response to urgent needs.  More >>

Building Playgrounds in New Orleans and Mississippi
On a sweltering June day in New Orleans, more than 200 volunteers came together to build a new playground, restoring children's laughter to a neighborhood badly decimated by Hurricane Katrina.  It was the first of three AmeriCares projects with KaBoom!  a nonprofit that focuses on building great places for children to play.  More >>
