First report from Baton Rouge

AmeriCares emergency response expert Jonathan Hodgdon is in Baton Rouge, La. assessing the needs of people in the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Gustav toppled trees, damaged buildings and caused massive flooding over the holiday weekend. Since all of the hotels in Baton Rouge were filled to capacity when he arrived Tuesday night, Jonathan spent the night in the home of an AmeriCares donor. Here is his first report from the field sent via text message to his colleagues in AmeriCares Stamford headquarters this morning. Internet access is limited because of widespread power outages in the region.

AmeriCares Emergency Response Expert Offers Hurricane Safety Tips

Gustav’s arrival this week serves as a reminder that hurricane season is well underway. This year’s season is already an active one, and forecasts call for more of these deadly storms in the coming months. AmeriCares has been responding to hurricanes for more than 25 years, providing relief supplies and medical expertise throughout the U.S., Caribbean, Latin America and other regions around the world. John Connell, AmeriCares director of emergency response, has participated in dozens of hurricane relief efforts for more than a decade, and stresses the importance of hurricane preparedness for U.S. residents within the hurricane belt.

Dental Services Bring Smiles to Mississippi

The number of qualified health professionals practicing in the communities affected by Hurricane Katrina remains low, due to factors such as a lack of housing and limited job prospects for spouses and other family members. The lack of practicing dentists is particularly acute in Mississippi, and AmeriCares has responded by supporting several programs that promote dental health.

AmeriCares Boosts Children’s Health with Vaccination Support in New Orleans

After Hurricane Katrina, most of the school records were lost or destroyed in the storm, and it was not possible to determine how many children were appropriately immunized. In an effort to remedy this, the Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, with the support of AmeriCares, implemented the School Kids Immunization Program (SKIP), an initiative that included an examination of available records, followed by a large scale vaccination program involving numerous city schools.

In Rural Pearlington, Lives Still in Flux

The Gulf Coast town of Pearlington, Mississippi is located less than 40 miles northwest of New Orleans, along the Pear River. When Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29, 2005, the eastern eye wall was directly over this rural town.

Community Spirit: Building A Place to Play in New Orleans

On a sweltering June day in New Orleans, more than 200 volunteers came together to build a new playground, restoring joy and laughter to a neighborhood badly decimated by Hurricane Katrina. It is the first of three AmeriCares projects with KaBoom!

Child Care: A Place to Play in Pass Christian
