With the help of donors and partner organizations, AmeriCares helped save thousands of lives in 2008.

From earthquakes in China to tornadoes in the American mid-west; from cyclones in Myanmar to hurricanes in Haiti, AmeriCares has delivered aid around the world, whenever and wherever it’s needed. In 2008, AmeriCares delivered over $1 billion worth of medicines, medical supplies and aid to 87 countries through our Global Medical Assistance, Emergency Response and Medical Outreach Programs. Rachel Granger, vice-president of post-emergency response, helped lead relief efforts in Indonesia after a giant tsunami killed over 225,000 people the day after Christmas in 2004.

As the anniversary of the tsunami approaches, Rachel recently returned to Indonesia to review the work AmeriCares has done over the last 4 years. She shares with us her experiences from the field including her first visit after the tsunami struck and subsequent visits to see the progress of rehabilitation programs supported by AmeriCares.
