Making a Difference in 2012: 94 Countries. 15 Million People.

December 28, 2012

Year in Review

It was a year of hope and progress.  With the help of our generous supporters, AmeriCares reached 94 countries with aid that touched the lives of 15 million people in fiscal year 2012.

Saving lives when disaster strikes

From deadly tornadoes and hurricanes that swept through the U.S. to famine in Africa to cholera epidemics in Haiti and Sierra Leone, to flood disasters, we provided lifesaving aid to people in crisis and continued our work to help stricken communities recover and rebuild.

  • Emergency Response: In FY2012, AmeriCares responded to 24 emergency events in 18 countries with $9.3 million in total aid, providing enough medicines for 1.8 million survivors.
  • Recovery Aid: $14.8 million in aid helped communities recover from trauma and loss in Japan, Haiti, the U.S. and Sri Lanka
  • Disaster Preparedness: Our new global pre-positioning initiative supported 100,000 people in 13 disaster-prone countries to help partners prepare before disaster strikes and quickly respond afterwards.

Bringing health and hope to people in crisis

More than 2 billion people worldwide don’t have access to the medicines and care they need to be healthy. To address this need, we send medical aid to more than 2,000 hospitals and clinics in our network of trusted in-country partners. This year we provided:

  • $271 million in lifesaving aid to help people in 36 countries.
  • $9 million in medicines and supplies to help mothers and children seeking care at hospitals and clinics around the world.
  • $65 million worth of total aid to bring health to people in 73 countries struggling with chronic diseases including cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Improving health here at home

The greatest portion of AmeriCares aid reaches our network of U.S. partners serving the poor and uninsured.  In the past year:

  • 2.1 million people in the U.S. were helped by our deliveries of medicine valued at $153 million.
  • $6.4 million in medical services to low-income children and adults at our three free clinics in Connecticut.

Empowering medical volunteers

Through our Medical Outreach Program, we supported medical volunteers from 781 organizations for 1,054 medical trips to 83 countries. Volunteers were sent with enough medicine to treat 1.3 million people.

Together we can make a difference

Since 1982, AmeriCares has delivered more than $10 billion in aid reaching 164 countries and counting. Your support helps make this possible.
