Basic medicines prevent unnecessary death in Guatemala

It takes at least an hour from the nearest town, traveling on winding and rock-covered dirt roads to get to the health post in the village of Veramina, Guatemala. On this typical Thursday, a long line of pregnant women and toddlers wait patiently to be seen by the doctor-nurse team, who appear once every two weeks to examine patients and offer treatment. The government provides some medications, but it's not enough to treat malnutrition, respiratory ailments, diarrhea, and gynecological problems of the women and children that visit the health post. Thankfully, the doctors receive supplemental medicines donated by AmeriCares.

When this baby boy was born, the doctor, knowing that the baby's maternal family had a history of hemophilia, tested him for the disease. The baby tested positive and just a day after he was born, suffered from a cranial bleed. Through a joint collaboration with pharmaceutical partner Baxter International, AmeriCares has been supplying Romanian hemophilia patients with treatments for their disease for more than ten years.

Providing Hope in Cambodia

Hundreds of people wait patiently in the outdoor waiting area of Cambodia's Sihanouk Hospital. Each is hopeful that today his or her name will be pulled from the lottery. Residents from all over the country travel to Phnom Penh because they can not afford health care and the Sihanouk Hospital Center of Hope (SHCH) offers free medical attention.
