Amid rising concerns about
outbreaks of water borne diseases and food shortages triggered by crisis-level
flooding in Central America, AmeriCares is responding with medical
aid and nutritional supplements to help survivors in Nicaragua, El
Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
The flooding, caused by heavy
rains of a severe tropical depression, has affected 1.2 million people
throughout the region, leaving hundreds of thousands displaced and in dire need
of medical care.

Lifesaving Emergency Aid
AmeriCares
is mounting a robust response to meet the needs of survivors, working with partners
and through our clinic in El Salvador:
- $6.5
million in urgently needed medicines, supplies and relief items was
delivered in early November to partners in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras
to help health providers treat sick and
injured survivors in shelters, clinics and hospitals.
- Funds
to purchase food to feed 800 families: Two $10,000 grants have
been awarded to a long time partners in El Salvador for food staples to families
living in shelters.
- $106,000
in relief items: distributed by the AmeriCares Family Clinic in Santiago de
Maria, El Salvador to shelters and hospitals in need. Items include blankets,
hygiene items, flashlights, nutritional supplements, cough and cold
medications.
- Medicines
and food items to help 1,000 people in the eastern region
of El Salvador, purchased and distributed by the AmeriCares Family Clinic.
Ongoing Assistance to Re-Stock
Supplies
A
series of AmeriCares ongoing sea shipments to the region will play an important
role in supplementing stocks of crucial medicines and relief items to help
partners continue to respond to this emergency:
- $3
million in medicines and supplies currently en route to El Salvador includes many items that
are critically needed in emergency response.
- $6.4
million in medicines and supplies that arrived in Honduras will be re-positioned to
address emergency needs.
- $10.2
million in medicines and supplies have been assembled in
two separate shipments and will soon be en route to Honduras to extend emergency relief efforts.
- $3.4
million in hygiene supplies and medicines including dermatological items
due to arrive in Guatemala contains items
ideal for responding to water-related emergencies.
- $2.2
million in flood-related medicines and supplies
is being prepared to ship to Nicaragua.
AmeriCares
has a long history of aid to Central America, both in emergency response and ongoing
shipments of medicines and medical supplies to the impoverished region,
benefiting a large population of children and adults in need.
