The first shipments from Americares include kits – one containing personal hygiene items and a second kit that contains cleaners, sponges, and towels, to help with flooded homes.

Garrett Ingoglia, director of emergency response, said shipments of medical supplies are also being packed.

“People have diabetes. They have other chronic conditions, cardiovascular conditions, and, you know, they may have lost their medicine in the storm,” he told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau. “We have antibiotics. We have anti-infectives. We have bandages and other medical supplies. We have insulin and Tetanus vaccines. Really whatever is necessary for these clinics and health centers.”

As the storm comes on the seventh anniversary of Katrina, Ingoglia was asked how the people on the Gulf of Mexico are coping.

“The people who live down there are very resilient and they bounce back,” he said. “So, we expect that that’s what will happen again.”
