Brian is President and CEO of OdysseyRe and Team AmeriCares top fundraiser.
On November 4, 2012, I will be running the ING New York City Marathon with Team AmeriCares. I can’t tell you how excited I am to be part of this team. Not only do I get to fulfill a lifelong dream of running a marathon, but I get to raise money for an organization that has done so much for so many people in need.
I’ve never run a marathon or any competitive race, apart from the occasional 5K charity run, but I’ve always wanted to do it. I love a challenge and there are few that test your physical and mental endurance more than running 26.2 miles. When I was invited to join Team AmeriCares in the ING New York City Marathon, I leaped at the opportunity.
Physical fitness is a big part of my life. Maintaining a high level of fitness helps relieve stress and is important for both my physical and mental well-being. I’m a firm believer in the adage: strong body, strong mind. Before my marathon training started, I worked out 5-6 days a week, anywhere from 1-2 hours per session. While I would not consider myself a runner -- I have always incorporated some element of cardio, running, spinning, and rowing -- into my routine.
My wife of 23 years and inspirational coach, June, has run with me in the shorter training runs. I also plan to train with my colleague, Tom, who is also running with Team AmeriCares.
I have worked in the reinsurance industry for 24 years. Sixteen years ago, I joined OdysseyRe, a leading worldwide underwriter of property and casualty reinsurance firm based in Stamford, CT. For the past five years, Odyssey has been a major supporter of AmeriCares, with overall donations of nearly $4 million.
I feel blessed to be given the opportunity to raise funds on behalf of AmeriCares, and have solicited pledges from family, friends, colleagues and business associates.
Thank you AmeriCares!
