In the aftermath of the October 2005 earthquake in Pakistan, the country’s National Institute of Health established an emergency immunization campaign, vaccinating 500,000 of those who were injured or vulnerable to injury, against tetanus. In a second round of immunizations, 1.5 million children between the ages of 6 months and 15 years were vaccinated against the measles. But in a country where 42 million vaccinations are given yearly to protect people against tuberculosis, diphtheria, measles, upper respiratory infections and other diseases, this unplanned vaccination campaign meant that more syringes were desperately needed. To respond to this need, AmeriCares turned to trusted partner BD (Becton, Dickinson & Company), the global medical technology company that manufactures syringes and needles.
