The first emergency shipment of lifesaving medicines and humanitarian aid has been rushed to drought ravaged Mogadishu, Somalia where catastrophic famine claims up to 5,000 lives each day. This shipment of medical aid will be used to treat 15,000 malnourished patients at risk of dying from preventable diseases. Another shipment is underway including enough nutritional supplements to feed 10,000 children and adults for a month.
As the humanitarian crisis escalates for tens of thousands of refugees streaming into overcrowded camps, AmeriCares has planned a prolonged relief strategy including 10 planned shipments of medical and nutritional supplies and oral rehydration salts to areas in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia where people have suffered the greatest effects of famine.
