1982 In response to a personal request from Pope John Paul II, Robert C. 1986 AmeriCares returns to Poland with food and baby formula after Chernobyl generates radioactive fallout. 1988 HomeFront is launched by AmeriCares to refurbish the homes of the physically and financially disadvantaged. An annual event in May, HomeFront ultimately attracted up to 5,000 volunteers in subsequent years. 1990 Hours after the liberation of Kuwait by the Allies, AmeriCares sends in medical supplies and a team of physicians. 1992 AmeriCares provides emergency supplies for victims of the Los Angeles riots and Floridians displaced by hurricanes. 1994 The first of three free health care clinics is established by AmeriCares for uninsured patients in the state of Connecticut. 1995 Camp AmeriKids is established to provide an outdoor camping experience for inner-city youngsters affected by HIV/AIDS. 1997 AmeriCares responds to severe flooding in the U.S. Midwest and Northwest with shipments of relief supplies. 1999 In a year of typical activity, AmeriCares sends aid to earthquake victims in Colombia, Turkey and Taiwan, to victims of civil strife in Kosovo and flood victims in Venezuela. 2000 A toxic waste spill in Kentucky, flooding in Mozambique, Cambodia and Vietnam, a cyclone in Madagascar, drought in Ethiopia and continuing conflict in the Middle East initiate emergency shipments from AmeriCares. 2001 Four hours after the first attack on the World Trade Center, seven helicopters arranged by AmeriCares land near Ground Zero with emergency supplies and medical teams. After the liberation of Afghanistan, AmeriCares returns there with medicine and supplies. 2002 Just days after a volcano erupted in the Congo, AmeriCares delivers life-saving medical supplies to two refugee camps on the Rwandan border. As floods in Kentucky paralyze the state, AmeriCares sends relief and clean-up supplies to the counties most affected. After the Czech Republic suffered its worst flooding in recorded history, AmeriCares delivers medicines and vaccines to the people of Prague and its surrounding cities. 2003 AmeriCares delivers more than $8.3 million of aid to Iraq via airlifts and ground shipments to Baghdad and Kirkuk. The initial airlifts to both cities are the first by a U.S. non-governmental organization after the military victory is declared. Additional airlifts of life-saving aid are sent into Monrovia, Liberia, where years of civil war caused the collapse of the country's healthcare infrastructure. AmeriCares first international family health clinic, Clinica Integral de Atencion Familiar, opens in Santiago de Maria, El Salvador.
